Riskfulness

Your brand is already taking a risk.

Doing nothing is a risk. Doing what the category does is a risk. The skill is understanding where the real risk is and doing something about it.

Five attitudes to risk.

Each one trades something away.
Most founders never decide what.

  1. 0–20

    Paralysis

Nothing changes. Waiting to be sure.

    Trading momentum for certainty.

  2. 20–40

    Caution

Does what the category does. Camouflage lives here.

Trading being noticed for feeling safe.

  3. 40–60

    Riskfulness

Picks the risk worth taking. On purpose.

Trading a little comfort for being chosen.

  4. 60–80

    Boldness

    Big moves. Eyes open.

    Trading energy for attention.

  5. 80–100

    Recklessness

Loud for the sake of it.

    Trading relevance for noise.

Being bold isn’t the point. Being intentional is.

I first drew this spectrum in 2024, for leaders and their teams, as a mindful way to take risks: feel the fear and do it anyway. Doing nothing because it feels safe is usually the bigger risk. It holds for brands too.

Most of the brand decisions that hold founders back aren’t reckless. They’re reasonable. Small, sensible choices that add up to a brand nobody notices.

Being Un-Usual doesn’t mean being loud. It means doing what your category isn’t – which might look small from the outside, and feel huge from the inside.
